How do I know when my mattress needs replacing?
As a rule of thumb, you should expect to replace both the mattress and box spring (as a set) every 8-10 years. Mattress longevity is affected by a variety of factors:
Factors to Consider:
Whether continual or occasional use
If you answer yes to any of the above questions, you may want to consider replacing your sleep set. And don't forget your own preference. If your mattress is no longer as firm as you prefer or if it too firm, you may sleep more comfortably on a new set. What features are most important to consider when buying a new mattress?
What features are most important to consider when buying a new mattress?
Don't be fooled by fancy-sounding model names or labels that say "firm" or "extra-firm." The only way to be sure that a mattress you buy is of good quality is to determine the type of coils, padding and insulation in its construction. Proper support means that your spine is kept in a relatively level position while the curves and contours of your body are gently supported by padding that separate the coil springs from you.
The amount and quality of coil springs in a mattress determines its ability to support the weight of a sleeping person. A full size mattress should have at least 300 coils. Pay attention, also, to what "guage" the coils are. The smaller the guage, the thicker and better supporting the coil. Ask to see a cut-away display that accurately represents the coils and padding used in the mattress you are planning to buy.
Finally, lie down on the mattress and determine how it feels. Different types of padding may give a feel of firmness or softness. Determine which you prefer. Additional padding will give you a softer feel but should still maintain proper support.

Do you detect sagging on either the the mattress or the box spring?
Can you feel the coils when lying down?
Do you feel the bed move noticeably whenever you turn over?
Are some parts of the mattress more comfortable than others?
Do you sleep better on another bed, perhaps when vacationing or visiting relatives?
